Chrisette sat in the chaise lounge in her bedroom. It was a rare occasion that she wasn’t working or thinking about work. For the most part, her bedroom was her second office. For the first time in a while, Chrisette relaxed, drank a glass of merlot and watched recorded episodes of “A Different World”. Tonight, she didn’t want to watch anything deep or too heavy. She just wanted to relax and laugh a little. She’d texted Gabriel as she agreed to and they exchanged several messages. Chrisette considered the question Gabriel raised that she was previously unable to answer. Who am I? She liked the fact that his question made her think, but it was a question she wouldn’t answer tonight. Chrisette turned her attention back to the show and sat deeper into her lounger deciding that relaxing instead was a good thing. When her house phone rang, Chrisette thought it odd. Who really uses a house phone anymore? Chrisette turned the television volume down and crossed the room to answer the phone.

“Hello?” She figured it to be a wrong number as she didn’t recognize the one that appeared on the call box.

“Hey there, Chrissy.” The voice on the other end was raspy and overly cheerful.

Immediately Chrisette recognized it and cringed; a gnawing, sick feeling churned in the base of her gut. There was only one person that called her Chrissy. She hated being called that.

“Hey Desiree,” she replied trying to keep it light, defying the turbulence in her stomach. “How are you?” Chrisette knew that question to be a double edged sword. She hoped the answer to the question wouldn’t be too costly for her in the end.

“I’m doing real good, Chrissy, real good. You’d be proud of me for how good I’m doing.”

“Excellent, glad to hear your doing well.” Chrisette didn’t believe Desiree was doing well for a minute. There was more to this phone call then her sister was letting on. Chrisette had changed her cell phone number every time Desi got a hold to it but she hadn’t bothered to change her home number. She rarely if ever received calls on her home phone. The only way Desiree had the home number was because their mother gave it to her. She would have a conversation with her mother about that. Holding the phone, Chrisette waited for the proverbial shoe to drop. She didn’t want to come right out and ask Desi what she wanted. That would be rude and Chrisette still harbored a certain amount of guilt for their shared past. But she also had real feelings about how Desi lauded the situation over her head to get what she wanted, whatever she wanted.

There was a long, uncomfortable pause; like each sister weighed and measured what they would say next. Finally, Chrisette broke the silence. She didn’t want to belabor the call any more than was absolutely necessary.

“So what’s going on with you? To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?”

“You trying to be
